Discernment

Hosea 14:9
Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
and the upright walk in them,
but transgressors stumble in them.

Ephesians 5:6-10
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord

Discernment is essential for the Christian. It is essential for our work in living out the gospel. Discernment is a key ingredient necessary to navigate the season of time we are in. It includes having a vision for the future. It requires insight and foresight. As someone else has said " the fundamental definition for Christian discernment is a decision making process in which an individual makes a discovery that can lead to future action. In the process of Christian spiritual discernment God guides the individual to help them arrive at the best decision." Discernment is to recognize a situation for what it is.

By God's grace Christians have been given a measure of discernment with respect to our pilgrim travels. Such discernment is necessary in order to be a credible voice in society at large. Now it is true that our voice is not welcome by most--but it remains a most necessary voice in faithfulness to the God we love and serve. Let us not tire of exercising discernment. Let us also pray for it.

Sincerely, in the confidence of our Lord's grace and truth. Rev. P.J. Vellenga
